Small elephant tattoo on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A woman sits on stone steps with her legs crossed, showing a small solid black elephant tattoo on her lower left calf, near the ankle. Beside her is a large grey stone elephant statue that doubles as a planter, with pink and white flowers spilling from its back. The image is cropped so that only the lower body and hair are visible, and the tattoo is the main point of focus in the frame.

Every spring the stone elephant at the top of Tamarind Lane grew heavier, and every spring Mrs Oyelaran swore it had put on weight from the geraniums. Her grandson Tobi thought this was nonsense until the morning he tried to shift it onto the handcart himself and the thing did not budge an inch.

It was a grey, patient beast with its trunk curled to its chest and a saddle of moss across its back. The courtyard grew out of it. Pink and white flowers poured over its shoulders, and the steps beside it were worn smooth by people waiting for buses that never came on time. Nobody had planted it. It had simply arrived, the way old things do, and the lane had arranged itself around it.
On the last night of the dry season Tobi sat on those steps with his tool bag at his feet and a copper coin turning over in his fingers, the one his father had kept for luck, its elephant worn almost flat. Mrs Oyelaran came down in her dressing gown, lowered herself beside him with a small groan, and said the elephant only moved for people who had nothing left to carry. He told her he had a van, a loan and a list of jobs as long as her arm. She laughed until she coughed. "Then put the bag down," she said, "and see what it does."
He set it down. The stone head lifted, slow as a tide, and a shower of petals came loose and drifted onto the step between his feet. The handcart stayed where it was. In the morning the bag was still on the stones, and so was he, and the coin was back in his pocket with its elephant facing up.
