Colour botanical tattoos of roses, butterflies and beetles cover the back of both hands and the wrist of a person whose face is hidden behind their hands.

Roses and insects across hands and wrists

Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo

A person with pale hair and a white flower crown holds both hands up to cover their face, outdoors among greenery. Both hands and the wrists show detailed tattoos of red and pink roses with green leaves, plus butterflies and beetles on the fingers and knuckles. The ink is full colour with soft shading, and the background is blurred, with warm sunlight on the scene.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The baker of Thornmere rose each morning while the town still slept, and each morning the rose bush by her back step had one more bloom than the day before. Her hands knew the dough before her eyes did. She stirred rose water into the mix, and the loaves came out with a faint pink in the crumb, like the inside of a shell.

One winter the flour ran low, and a stranger came to the back door with a sack on his shoulder. He asked for bread. When she said she had none to spare until the ovens were lit, he set the sack down. A beetle the colour of a plum crawled out of the weave and walked up his sleeve. He did not brush it off. He said only that the rose would need pruning before it swallowed the wall, and that she should cut it at the third leaf.

She did not believe him, but she was tired, so she cut it. Sap the colour of honey ran down the stem. The next morning the dough rose higher than it ever had, and the windowsill was crowded with butterflies drinking from the damp flour.

The stranger never came back. But whenever the town needed bread in a hurry, the bush at the back step was in bloom before dawn. Her daughter learned to cut at the third leaf, and to leave the beetles be.
