Small heart tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised with the palm turned away from the camera, wearing several gold rings and bracelets. A small black outline heart sits on the side of one finger, with a tiny dark mark on the side of the hand near the little finger. The background shows a black and gold Buddha statue, green leaves and a white cushioned sofa, in soft natural light.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the stove, because the river doesn't care whether you've heard this one before. Forty years I've hauled coal up the Ouse on the Mary Ellen, and I have never once slept with the lamp out. That's the first thing you should know about Cecily Vane. The second is that she came aboard at Selby with a brass Buddha wrapped in a wool stocking and not much else.

She kept him on the galley shelf, his gold worn to copper where her thumb rubbed his belly for luck. Every night she drew a little black heart on the side of one finger with ink from a jar she'd bought off a lock-keeper. The heart was for Jack Orme, a fishmonger's lad in Hull who had promised to follow her with a ring and never did. You could tell from how she said his name that the heart had been a promise once, and was now more like a bookmark she kept meaning to lose.

One November the tow rope snapped below Naburn and we swung broadside into the weir race. Cecily went over the side after the Buddha, which tells you where her heart really was. Pete Garrow got her by the collar. The statue went down in his stocking and the river kept him.

Come spring she was still aboard, still drawing the heart each night, though she never once mentioned Jack again. Then a letter arrived, sodden and folded small, with no stamp at all. I read it to her in the wheelhouse. It said only, Your Buddha is on the Hull side of the lock gate, come and claim him, and it was signed with a little black heart.
