Sit closer, the fire won't last past the next hour and you'll want to hear the part about the lorry before the wind gets up. Forty miles out from Dry Wells there's a bend where the tarmac gives up and the road becomes two pale ruts. Old Teodor kept a tin box of blue glass beads on the dashboard of his water tanker, and every one of them had a dark dot at its centre, so he always said the road was looking back at him.

He was carrying water to the salt flats the summer the well at Harrow Pan went brackish. Nobody on that run drove at night, but Teodor did, because his daughter's wedding was on the coast and he had promised her he'd be there with the good cloth. Somewhere past the cattle grid a light came up off the verge, low and steady, the colour of a struck match. He braked. The light did not move. When he got out there was only a flat stone painted with an eye, its lashes thrown out like the rays of a sun, the paint so fresh the stone was still damp.

He drove on without the cloth, and without the beads, which he threw out of the window one by one until the box was empty. He told everyone the road had finally stopped watching him. The wedding was a fine day all the same. His daughter says the stone is still out there, and that whenever she passes it she lifts a hand to the small eye she has inked at her own nape and nods, as though it might be keeping count.
