Geometric · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's neck and upper shoulders, with dark hair gathered into a loose bun held by a hairpin. The image is black and white, with fine, crisp linework and soft, even lighting against a pale background.

The lamp at Skerrin Head had been dark for eleven days when Ada Penhallow climbed the iron stair with the oil can and found the lens furred with salt. She wiped it with a square of chamois, then a second square, then gave up and sat on the bottom step to wait for the tide to turn so the relief boat could come.

Her father had kept a ledger of every light he ever lit. Ada opened it across her knees and turned past his neat columns of hours to the back pages, where he had drawn the little figures he used to teach her the signals: a single stroke for one flash, a diamond boxed in ink for the danger bell, and beneath each, the dots that counted the seconds between. She had always thought them a child's puzzle. Now she copied the diamond onto the slate by the door, pressing hard so the chalk squeaked.
The boat came round the point at four, its engine coughing. The man who stepped onto the landing was young and wet to the knees, and he asked her, before any greeting, whether the light would be lit tonight. She told him it would, because she had already decided it.
She climbed back up with the can and the chamois. When she struck the lamp at dusk, the beam swung out over the water in its long, patient sweep, and far out in the dark a single answering flash blinked back the shape of the diamond: short, pause, short, pause, then the dots. Ada counted them under her breath, and the ship came in.
