Small fine line marks on wrist and finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a hand and wrist showing several very small black tattoos, including a cross-like mark and a letter-like shape on the wrist, a tiny dot below, and a small symbol on a finger. The linework is thin and the ink is black with no shading or colour. The hand rests against a black mesh garment, beside a red quilted handbag with a chain strap and some gold rings.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The night shift at Lenmouth Crossing runs on the same three pens, and by half past two you have stopped noticing which one is in your hand. The fine-nibbed black one is for the margins. A cross beside a name means the traveller has a sister waiting on the far side. A dot means ring the desk before you stamp. The letter you keep for the people nobody has come to meet.

A boy of perhaps nineteen slides a damp passport under the glass, a train ticket folded inside it, his sleeve pushed up against the cold. The stamp says he came from Gdansk last week. The name on the page is one you have seen before in the logbook, in your own handwriting, from a February you would rather not reread. You tilt the booklet under the lamp and find nothing in the margin, which means nobody has marked him yet.

Your pen is in your breast pocket. You uncap it, make a small dot in the corner of the page where only you will look, then the cross, then the letter that stands for nobody. You cover the desk light with your palm. Then you wave him through, and he does not look back, which is exactly right.

At six the sun comes up grey over the car park. You sign off the logbook and, when you wash your hands, find a dot of black ink on the inside of your wrist, small as a full stop. You leave it there and drink your tea while it dries.
