Small script line tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a forearm showing a short line of small black script lettering, angled diagonally from the wrist towards the elbow. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. A crystal-encrusted metal bracelet sits on the wrist, and the hand is partly visible, with the background cropped to a plain olive-grey garment and a pale backdrop.

The gilding on the shopfront had gone green at the edges by the time Mrs Okonedo asked me to letter the last line, and I told her I would do it slowly, the way Dad taught me before his hands started shaking. She wanted the words to run uphill, a slight slant from the door towards the corner, so customers would read them without quite knowing they were doing it.

I spent three evenings on the rule lines with a sable brush no thicker than a hair. On the third night I noticed my own handwriting on the margin of the invoice was leaning the same way, the letters reaching for the window as if they wanted out. Dad would have clipped me round the ear for it. Instead I sat on the step with the tin of size going tacky and laughed until the sparrows abandoned the gutter.
The words were a sentence she had sent me on a card, pencilled in a hand I didn't know, asking for them to stay thin and black with no fuss. When the size set I climbed the ladder to check the slant from above. From up there the line stopped being letters. It became a path, and at the far end, where the corner met the road, a man had stopped to read it with his hands in his coat pockets and was smiling at the glass.
Mrs Okonedo never told me what the words meant. She paid me in cash and a loaf still warm from the oven, and said the letters had done their job. I have never asked her to translate them, and I have never needed to.
