Small flowering sprig on the inner upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black ink sprig of tiny flowers and thin stems sits on the inner upper arm, angled diagonally across the skin. The linework is delicate and mostly unshaded, with small dots and fine lines forming the blossoms, and the pale background of the skin keeps the design clear. A darker dotwork mandala tattoo is partly visible at the lower left, and the photo is taken against a plain white backdrop.

Dear Nell,

The pass shut on Tuesday and the Crown at Hollin Fold has become our whole world. Mrs Parr has forty loaves rising in the back kitchen and a rota for the coal, and I have been given the job of counting the guests, which is easy, as there are only six of us and one of them is a dog. Yesterday I walked out to the gate with the lantern to see if the lane was passable and found the snow drifted level with the top bar, smooth as a sheet on a bed nobody has slept in.
Mrs Parr keeps a sprig of something pressed between the pages of the ledger. Tiny blue flowers, faded to the colour of weak tea. When I asked, she said her husband brought it up from the valley the spring before he went to the mill at Ackroyd, and that he had told her the little flowers were called forget-me-nots, which she thought was a bit much for a weed. She never writes to him, she says, because she is not sure which address he would be at now.
I have decided the sprig is the only honest thing in the building. Everything else here is making do. I am writing this at the kitchen table with my boots steaming by the range, and I will post it the moment the lorry gets up the hill, so you will have it before the thaw. Tell Dad I did not sell the car.
Love, Ada
