Sprig of flowers on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A slender stem curves diagonally up the arm, with small five-petalled flowers and closed buds branching off it. The linework is delicate and even, built from single fine lines with little or no shading. The image is black and grey on pale skin against a dark, softly blurred background.

The mule refuses the last switchback, so you unload the seed tins yourself and carry them up the scree inside your coat. Marta said the pass would be bare until July, and she was right about the snow but wrong about everything else. Halfway up, where the path runs under an overhang of grey rock, you find a single stem growing out of a crack, thin as wire, with five-petalled flowers no bigger than a fingernail and a few buds still shut tight against the wind.

You kneel and do not touch it. Your notebook has a page for this kind of thing, started at Kendal in the spring when the old botanist handed you her hand lens and said nothing worth keeping ever grows where it is convenient. You sketch it in pencil the way she taught you: one long line for the stem, then the branches, then the flowers drawn as if you were counting them aloud. The wind takes the paper twice. The third time you pin it down with a pebble and let the wind do what it likes.
By the time you reach the cairn the light has gone flat and blue. Marta is already there with a flask, pretending not to watch the path. You hand her the notebook without a word. She turns to the page, reads the label you pencilled under the sprig, and laughs, a short surprised sound, because the label is not a Latin name. It is the name of the pass, given by a shepherd who buried his wife on the far side and planted, every year after, one stem of whatever would grow in the cracks.
