Cherry blossom branch on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A slender branch with several open blossoms, closed buds and small pointed leaves runs diagonally down the skin from the top of the frame to the lower right. The linework is fine and even, with light stippled shading in the petals and centres giving the flowers some depth. The design is in black and grey ink against a neutral, softly lit background of grey fabric.

Every Saturday the Harrow brothers climbed the stairs with the band, and every Saturday Nell Garrity stood by the cloakroom door with her hands in her pockets, pretending she hadn't come to look.

The spring of the great frost, a lad named Tomas Vell walked in from the orchards at Cliffe carrying a branch he'd snapped from a tree in the lane. He had no business bringing it inside, and the door-woman told him so. But he held it out to Nell across the room like a man offering a lantern. The blossom was so pale against his dark coat that the dancers stopped to look, the fiddle went flat for a bar, and nobody minded in the least.
They danced until the last waltz with the petals coming loose and drifting across the boards. By midnight there were drifts of white in the corners like a late snow that wouldn't melt. Nell pressed one flower between the pages of the hall's ledger. Tomas went off to the war in May and never came back up those stairs. The ledger is still in the cupboard under the landing, and the flower is still in it, brown as tea, and it has never once asked anybody to stay.
