The keeper at the river gate of Lesser Vadim had counted every creature across the bridge for thirty years, and she had never once been asked to stamp a giraffe. It arrived at dawn, folding its neck down under the arch so its head came level with her window, and asked politely to be let through to the far bank, where the king was waiting for news of the weather.

Marta looked for the papers and found none. She looked at the toll board, which listed sheep, salt, bells and grief, and found nothing that suited. 'Everything crossing this bridge pays in something it can spare,' she said. The giraffe considered this for a long time, its shadow lying across the water like spilled ink. 'Then take my shadow,' it said. 'I have plenty, and the river is always short of dark.'
It gathered itself down, leg by leg, until it was no bigger than the nail of her smallest finger, and stepped onto the side of her hand. The shadow stayed behind on the cobbles, flat and useless. Marta carried the little beast across the bridge in the cup of her palm, past the sheep and the salt, and set it down before the king, who laughed and asked what he was meant to do with a fleck of soot.
She shrugged and blew gently, and the giraffe unfolded to full height in the square, its head above the rooftops. From up there it could see the flood coming down from the hills two valleys away, and the king sent riders in time. Marta went back to her gate with one dark mark on her finger, and when the river rose in autumn she held her hand up to the morning light and watched which way the giraffe was looking.
