Small black silhouette on the hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black silhouette tattoo sits on the back of a hand, close to the base of the fingers. The shape resembles an animal's head and neck, with a simple, filled outline and no interior detail. The ink is the only colour in the image, which is a warm-toned close-up with the fingers and skin filling the frame.

The porter at Yarrow Cross was the only one who saw the giraffe come up the platform that November, its neck bent under the iron canopy so it could look along the rails. Nobody had brought it. The ticket clerk swore it had not come on the Leeds train, and the guard swore he had counted every carriage twice, so the stationmaster wrote it down as a stray and left a bucket of water by the waiting room door.

It stayed through the winter. It ate the ivy off the signal box and the sugar beet from the goods yard, and when the frost came it stood in the lee of the water tower, folding its long head down against the bricks. Children from the terrace brought it windfall apples. The stationmaster's daughter, Nell Brackenridge, who was nine and had opinions, said it was waiting for a train that went up the hill instead of down, and nobody argued with her, because the old quarry line did run that way and nothing had climbed it since the war.

In February a telegram came for the stationmaster with no name on it, only a question: had the animal been fed? He read it twice and put it in the stove. The next morning the platform was empty, and there were hoofprints in the frost leading up the cutting toward the quarry road, each one as wide as a dinner plate and a long stride apart.

Nell kept the bucket. She filled it every evening anyway, and when the 6.10 pulled in she always looked up the line first.
