Small bow tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of a bow sits on the side of one finger of a light-skinned hand, with the ends of the loops drawn in a thin, single black line. The tattoo is simple and centred on the finger, with the rest of the hand and nails in soft focus. The ink appears dark grey to black against the skin, and the background shows a dark surface and a wooden floor.

The knot was the only thing Old Mairi trusted with the boats. Every net that came off the Carrick slip had to be tied off with a bow before it went below, a loop for the hauling and a loop for the letting go, so the sea would know who had made it and be gentle with them. The younger hands laughed at her for it until the winter the Kestrel went out in fog and came back without her crew, and nobody laughed after that.

Her grandson Callum took up the bench beside her the spring he turned fifteen. He learned to pull the tail through the second loop without looking, the way she did, and to say the little words under his breath, which he did not believe but did not mind saying. He thought the bow was a charm. She told him it was a promise: that what you tie will be untied by your own hand and no one else's.

In May a storm came in from the west with no warning the gulls would have given. Callum was out on the Morag with the nets half-shot when the line fouled his wrist. He had time to think of the knot on his finger, the one she had tied for him with black thread on his fifth birthday, and he worked the loop loose with his teeth and his other hand. The boat came home. The thread, when he cut it off that night, was frayed to nothing.

Old Mairi held his hand under the lamp and said nothing for a long while. Then she tied a fresh bow on his smallest finger, and told him the sea had only wanted to see whether he could undo a thing he loved.
