Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A person's arm is crossed over their body, with one hand resting near the elbow and a silver ring on one finger. A small, solid gold triangle sits on the outer forearm, filled with fine dotted or textured metallic detail. The background is a plain teal wall, with a floral print fabric in the upper and right parts of the frame.

Pull your chair nearer the grate, because the coal man says the frost gets into the bridges after midnight, and this is a night-time tale. Forty winters back, when the gas lamps on Corvel Street still hissed and the river smelled of pennies, there was a gilder called Mabel Crane who worked in a room above the bakery.

She beat gold leaf thinner than a breath and kept it in books of tissue paper. One wet night a boy came up her stairs with a broken cart wheel and no coin in his pocket, and asked whether she could make a sign that would bring his sister home from the tram depot. She told him gold never brought anybody home. He said, then make it a shape that means the way.

So she took the last square of her best leaf, laid it on the cutting board, and with a knife worn down to a sliver she cut a triangle no wider than a thumbnail. Point up, always point up, she told him, because a thing that points down is only waiting to fall. She pressed it with a stippling brush, a hundred tiny dots, so it caught the lamplight like frost on a windowsill.

The boy wore it on his wrist for a year. His sister came home on a Thursday in the rain, and Mabel never once asked what it cost him. Some nights, when the lamps on Corvel Street run low, I still see that small gold point glinting along the pavement, and I think of her worn knife and how little gold it takes to show somebody the way home.
