The seventh arrow was the one Hedda would not let her father sell. He had fletched it from grey goose feather and tipped it with a sliver of black flint, and when the huntsmen of Varnholt came asking for the finest shaft in the marsh kingdom, he reached for it without thinking. Hedda put her hand over the quiver. 'That one is for the stars,' she said, and her father laughed until he saw she meant it.

Every clear night that summer she stood on the wall above the reed beds and counted the seven small lights the herders called the Sheepfold. Seven was the number of hunters who had gone into the Greywood and not come out. She had promised the widows she would bring them home, and a girl of eleven could keep no promise without a bow that reached far enough, so she practised until her fingers bled and her father hid the rags.

On the last night of the month she drew the old shaft to her ear, loosed it over the marsh, and watched it climb past the chimney smoke until it vanished among the points of light. Nothing answered. She went to bed cross and cold. In the morning the reeds lay flattened in a line from the wood to her doorstep, and on the step the arrow stood point down in the threshold stone, its flint warm as a hearth. Wrapped about its shaft was a single grey feather, and beside it sat seven wet footprints that ended at the door.

Down the lane the first widow was already running.
