Constellation tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bent arm rests across white bedsheets, showing a fine-line tattoo of small dots joined by thin lines in a zigzag, resembling a star pattern. The linework is delicate and fairly pale, with no solid shading, and the design sits on the forearm close to the elbow. The soft, neutral palette and loose folds of fabric keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The lamp in the cart shed has gone out again, so I am writing this by the kitchen range with your old compass propped against the teapot. Mother says the frost will take the beans before Michaelmas, and the Hallows boy has been sniffing round the gate, but none of that is what I want to tell you.
Last night I finished the chart you asked for. You will laugh. I went out past the last oak where the woods stop and the field begins, lay on the wet grass with my coat under me, and counted the stars the way you taught me, from the brightest down. There are seven that matter. The rest are only dust on the glass. I pricked each of them onto the paper with the awl, then ran a line from one to the next in the order you would walk them, the way the drovers used to step out the old road.
Here is the odd part. When I drew the line from the fourth point to the fifth, the lines seemed to meet a bend in the lane I had never noticed. I measured it twice. The lane turns exactly where the star points. I have told nobody in the village, because Father would only ask whether I had been out in the damp again.
Keep the compass, Tom. Bring it back when the ships are done with you, and we will walk the line together, from the oak to the water, and see where it lets us out.
Your loving sister, Nell
