Small hummingbird on an inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small hummingbird in mid-flight with outstretched wings and a long, thin beak sits on the inner forearm, near the wrist. The bird is rendered in fine black linework with soft grey shading and light stippling on the body and wings. The plain light background and dark sleeve keep the focus on the tattoo.

The bird had come in through the scullery window, and by the time Edna Pell found it, it was hanging against the pantry ceiling like a thrown pebble that had forgotten gravity. Breakfast for eleven guests was already on the hob. She stood on a kitchen chair with a tea towel and waited, the way her late husband had taught her to wait for a wasp, and when the thing finally dropped onto the windowsill she cupped it so gently she felt nothing at all.

Its beak was longer than she had expected, thin as a darning needle. Her lodger, a retired cartographer named Mr Ashdown who took his porridge at the same corner table every morning, came in to ask about the smell of scorched toast and stopped in the doorway. He knew birds. He had once drawn the coastline of three islands for a survey office and could name the seabirds without looking up.
"Not from here," he said. "Nothing from here moves like that."
They carried it out to the back garden together, past the washing and the bins, to the foxglove by the wall where the flowers were loudest. Edna opened her hands. For a second the bird sat there, bewildered, its wings held out flat as if it were still deciding which way the sea lay. Then it was gone over the roofs toward the harbour, quick as a thought she hadn't finished.
Mr Ashdown ate his porridge that morning without comment, and Edna served it with the window open, listening.
