A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had counted the fence posts twice before she admitted the swallows had gone. The barn at Hollin Fold had held a dozen nests every summer of her childhood, mud cups stuck under the rafters like thumbprints, and in October they had lifted off the slates all at once, a dark scarf unwinding over the top field. Her grandfather said they were heading for the Cape, or somewhere past it, and that they would come back to the same nest if the roof held.

The roof did not hold. In the first hard frost of December a slate slid from the north pitch and took the gutter with it, and Nell spent a Saturday on the ladder with a tin of tar while her grandfather steadied the rungs from below with cold hands. The wind came sideways off the moor. Snow sat on the hay bales in a crust that cracked when the dog walked over it.

On the last afternoon she found a single swallow pressed into the corner of the byre, one wing folded wrong, its eye open and very bright. It was not dead. She carried it in her cardigan to the kitchen and set it on a folded towel by the range, where it lifted its head toward the warmth as if it had been expecting it.

By morning it had gone, the towel still warm and one long feather lying on it, forked at the tip. Nell pinned the feather to the beam above the back door, where the nests had been, and told her grandfather the roof was mended. He looked up at it for a long time and said nothing, which was how she knew he agreed.
