Hummingbird tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single hummingbird in profile, with a long beak, folded wing and a small curling tail that tapers into a spiral. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale, softly lit forearm against a light background.

Sit nearer the range, the lot of you, and mind the cat. Now, this was the winter the Penhallow orchard froze so hard the apples split on the boughs, and old Jory Trevail went out every morning with a kettle to thaw the pump. He was not a man for stories, so when he came in one dawn swearing that something had been at the glasshouse glass, nobody believed him until they saw the pane.

Something small had got in through a broken light and was going at the last of the geraniums like a clock with the spring wound too tight. Its wings went so fast they were only a blur, and it hung in the air the way a stone hangs in a pond before it sinks. Jory's wife, Morwenna, said it was a bee gone mad with cold. Her grandmother's sister had once told her that such birds came over the sea on the backs of storms and ought never to be caught, because they carried the warmth of wherever they had been.

So they left the door open and put out a saucer of sugar water, which is what the almanac said to do, and they waited. It came down on the third morning, folded its long needle of a beak into the sugar, and stayed a long moment with its tail curled behind it like a fern about to unfurl. Then it was gone through the broken pane towards the sea. Jory mended the glass that week with a sheet of tin. The apples came back the next autumn, and nobody at Penhallow ever again complained of the cold.
