Small jellyfish tattoo on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A small jellyfish with a rounded blue bell and orange tentacles trailing upwards and to the right. The linework is light and sketchy, with soft blue and orange shading that gives a watercolour effect. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame on bare skin, with a patterned fabric and a little blonde hair at the left edge.

The snow had buried the lane to the village by the second day, and the Crown and Anchor had nothing left to burn but the old settle. Mother said we would have to break it up if the coal ran out before the plough came. I went to the back room for the last of the kindling and found the jar instead, the one Captain Ostler left behind when he owed us eleven weeks' rent.

Inside the jar, floating in grey spirit, was a jellyfish he had claimed to net off Whitby, though the label in his shaky hand said Skegness. Its bell had faded to the colour of old slate and its trailing arms curled like wet thread. I carried it to the kitchen anyway, because the light from the range came through the glass and for once the thing looked alive.
Mother saw me holding it and snorted. "He'd sell his own mother for a story," she said, but she didn't take it off me. We sat on the flagstones while the wind worked at the shutters, and I told her what the captain used to say: that the sea keeps its colours for the dark, and nothing out there is truly colourless, it only waits for a lamp. I tipped the jar toward the fire. The spirit turned gold, the bell flushed a bruised orange at its heart, and a blue like the far edge of a cold morning crept up along the threads.
By dawn the plough had cleared the lane. I kept the jar on the windowsill, and when the first cart came up the hill the driver stopped to stare at the glass, then at me, and asked whether I had ever seen the sea. I said no, not yet, and set the jar down where the sun could find it.
