Black swan with purple splashes on upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A solid black swan silhouette with its neck curved sits on the upper arm, with loose purple splashes and drips beneath it suggesting water. The black fill is dense and even, while the violet marks are softer and more diffuse, with a few small droplets scattered outward. The tattoo is framed centrally against bare skin, with a black top and patterned skirt visible and a blurred wooden background.

The swan came up out of the Sound the week after the boats were lost, and nobody on Carrick Holm could say where it had been. It was black all over, as black as wet slate, and it swam against the tide with its neck drawn up like a question.

Old Ivy Maddern, who kept the ferry shed, said it was the bird that had stood on the rock the night her husband rowed out. She told the children to leave it be. Her grandson Tam did not listen. He took a bucket of bread to the slipway at dusk and found the water beneath the bird stained violet, as if someone had emptied a dye pot off the steps, and the drops that ran from its wings hissed where they touched the weed.

Tam asked it what it wanted. The swan turned its long neck toward the lighthouse, toward the dark sea beyond the reef, and then toward him. Nobody had told him that the price of a boat's return was a bird's patience, so he sat on the wet stones and waited with it until the tide had turned three times.

The boats came home in the spring, every one of them, though the men aboard swore they had never been gone. Tam never fed the swan again. When the water went clear that summer, he still saw the purple shadow under the slipway, drifting and spreading, and he counted the drops each morning like a man counting debts he was glad to owe.
