Small Leo zodiac symbol on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph taken from behind shows a person with dark hair gathered up, both hands holding it. A small, thin black outline of the Leo zodiac symbol sits on the back of the neck, just below the hairline and centred. The background is soft and warm-toned, and the ink is the only colour detail in the subject area.

Sit down, the lot of you, and let the band have their tea, because this is the one about the lion who came to the Crescent ballroom in Hollin Bay the winter the sea froze at the pier. Nobody had ever seen a lion dance. He came in through the side door with his mane gathered up behind his head, the way a lady pins her hair before the Lancers, and he asked old Mrs Pryce at the cloakroom for a card.

She said she had no cards for lions. He said he didn't want a card, he wanted a partner who could keep time with a tail. His tail was like a question mark that had gone on too long, curled at the end where the tip should be, and every time the trumpet hit a high note it flicked up and knocked the sugar bowls off the tables. The dancers stepped back. Only Dorothy Hale, who had worked the bakery counter since the Boer War and feared nothing that didn't arrive in a crate, held out her hand.
They waltzed until the lamps guttered. He never once roared. That was the trick of it. A lion who dances has no need to roar, because the floorboards say everything a roar would say, and he went round with his great head bowed close to hers as if listening for a tune only he could hear. When the clock struck twelve he bowed, she curtsied, and he went out into the dark the way he had come, one loop of mane still hanging behind him.
Mrs Pryce swore she found a single hair on the cloakroom hook next morning, curled tight as a seahorse's tail. Dorothy never said a word about it. She simply took to wearing her hair up every Saturday after that, and when anyone asked her why, she said a lion had once been very polite to her, and that was reason enough for anybody.
