Small zigzag line tattoo on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of three connected zigzag strokes sits on the back of the neck, drawn in thin dark ink. The linework is crisp and even, with no shading or fill, and the design is set against plain skin. The soft background shows dark hair pulled up with a clip and a white top with bold black stripes, all in a close, shallow-focus composition.

You are the only one in the bakery at four, the proving drawers humming, when the cups on the shelf begin to chatter. The old seismograph Dougie bolted above the flour bins years ago as a joke is inking its drum in three sharp peaks. You wipe your hands on your apron and watch the pen leap, settle, then leap again.

Nobody believes the drum. Dougie says it is the lorries on the ring road, or the tram lines the council swore they had pulled up. But you know the grumble a fault makes under a town, low and steady, like a dough hook turning through stiff rye. You slide the first tray of bloomers onto the peel anyway, because the ovens still need feeding and the shutters go up at six whatever the ground is doing.

By five the pen has scratched a jagged line across the paper, and the street outside is quiet in a way that feels deliberate. You unbolt the back door to let the cold in. A gull shrieks over the bins, a dog barks two streets away, and the dough behind you keeps rising, slow and stubborn, indifferent to whatever moved beneath the town.

At quarter to six you tear the drum sheet off, fold it into your apron pocket, and carry the first loaves out to the counter, still warm enough to fog the glass. The pen has gone still. You put the kettle on, flip the sign to open, and wait for the bell over the door to ring.
