Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black ink tattoo of a jagged mountain peak sits at the base of the neck, with the back of the head and hair visible. The linework is thin and sketchy, with light hatching on the shaded side of the peaks. The image is in greys and blacks against soft, neutral skin and a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit, the kettle can wait, it always could. You want the one about the boy on the fourteenth floor of Calder Court, and the mountain that wasn't there. Every morning Tomasz pressed his forehead to the kitchen window and looked past the gasometer and the cranes and the wet grey roofs, and far off, on the clear days, there was a peak. Jagged, like a torn page. His gran said it was the Tatras, where she was born. The school atlas said otherwise, but the atlas had never climbed fourteen floors to look either.

So he started drawing it. Biro on the backs of brown envelopes, on the margins of his maths book, on the inside of his wrist when the paper ran out. He put in little strokes of shadow on the shaded side of each peak, the way his uncle had shown him on a bus ticket, and every drawing came out a bit more certain of itself than the last. By autumn his mother said the boy would wear a hole through the glass, and the caretaker said nothing about the pencil marks on the wall beside the window, which was how things were done in that building.

Then the fog came in and sat on the estate for three weeks. The peak was gone. Tomasz sat at the window every evening anyway, drawing it from memory, and he got so good that the drawings started to look more like the mountain than the mountain did. On the twenty-second day the fog lifted, and there it was, smaller and greyer than his pages, with a cloud caught on one shoulder like a scarf. He stood there a long time. Then he went and found a fresh envelope and drew what was really there, which was harder and took all night.

And that, love, is why you never trust a view you've only ever copied. Now the kettle, go on, it's boiled.
