Pinky promise hands on the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two hands with their little fingers hooked together in a pinky promise gesture. It is drawn in thin, single-weight black linework with no visible shading, and the outlines are clean against the skin. The photograph is taken from behind on a soft, blurred background, with a grey top across the lower frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fishing boats had gone out before light, and Marjorie Quayle stood on the harbour wall with her arms folded against the wind, watching the gap between the breakwaters where her brother's boat should have come back by now. Her younger sister Ivy had been promised a shell necklace from the market in Penzance if she behaved, and she had not behaved, and now she was sulking in the net loft with a cat on her knees.

The pinky promise had been Ivy's idea, the way everything was. They had been seven and nine, sitting on the cold stones behind the chandler's, and Ivy had hooked her small finger round Marjorie's and said that whoever broke it would have to walk the whole length of the pier backwards in front of the gulls. Marjorie had laughed and agreed, and the promise had stuck through a decade of arguments, a wedding that never happened and a house sold off piece by piece.

The boat came round the point just after eight, low in the water and trailing a cloud of gulls. Marjorie did not wave. She went down the steps to the slipway instead, and when her brother jumped onto the wet boards with a crate in each arm she hooked his little finger with hers, right there in front of the whole harbour.

"You're late," she said. "And I owe you a walk backwards."

He grinned and set the crates down. Somewhere up the hill, Ivy was already running.
