Small fine line fox on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a fox in profile, facing left, with a long bushy tail sweeping up and behind. The linework is thin and slightly broken, with minimal shading and no fill. The fox is in black or grey ink against a soft, pale skin tone, with the dark hair and grey top at the edge of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

The fox came back again last night, just as you said she would, and went straight past the crates to the far row where the Bramleys have started dropping. I watched from the kitchen step with the light off. She didn't hurry. She stopped twice to test the air with her nose, then lifted her tail up and behind her like a flag somebody had forgotten to lower, and went off under the hedge towards the Pritchards' field.
I have been thinking about what you told me in July, that a fox in the orchard means the year is turning, and that you should leave her a few apples and not chase her off with the broom. I left six on the wall. This morning there were five, one of them half eaten with the neat tooth marks you'd expect, and the rest of the wall was wet from the dew and smelt of cider already, which is early for it.
The men come on Thursday to take the ladders down. Dad would have hated that they're doing it before the Egremont Russets are picked, but Mr Hollis says the frost will be early and he won't risk the last of the crop. So the place will go quiet soon. I suppose that is why I keep leaving the wall out.
Come up before the end of the month if you can. Bring the tin of ink you wanted to show me, the one with the little brush. I'd like to see something drawn that fast and that light before the orchard goes bare.
Love, Maud
