Small outline heart behind the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline sits on the skin behind the ear, with the hair swept back and the head turned away from the camera. The heart has a solid black line that looks slightly uneven in weight, and its interior is left as bare skin. The plain background is soft and out of focus, which keeps attention on the tattoo.

Our Ruth wanted a heart cut from the lid of an old biscuit tin, and Dad said no, because a heart wants a proper stamp and a steady hand, and his hand had started to shake the winter the pass closed. So she sat on the workbench in her boots and watched him try anyway. The first cut wandered off towards the rim. He swore, turned the sheet over, and began again with the snips gripped in both fists like a man holding a rope.

Three days later the heart was done, if done is the word. The line bulged where he had rested his wrist and thinned where the blade skated. He hadn't knocked the middle out, so it stayed hollow, a small window of bright tin with the workshop lamp shining through. Ruth carried it up the pass on the morning the carrier left for Settle, pinned inside her coat, and when the mist came down over the cairn she held it flat against her chest and felt the cold edge through her shirt.
She came back in April with a letter from a man in Lancaster who mended ploughs, asking for a second heart, one for his brother who had gone south to the mills. Dad read the letter twice, then took the snips down from their hook without being asked. This time he left the line thick and uneven on purpose, and the heart came out lopsided and honest, with an empty middle the size of a thumbprint, just right for something small to be kept in.
He hung it on the nail beside the door, where the morning light could get through to it.
