The snow had come down on Hollin Farm for nine days, and by the tenth the well was frozen to its lip. Ada's father did not come in for his tea. She took the lantern down to the lower field and found the gate standing open, the hurdles knocked flat, and one set of boot prints going out across the white towards the beck.

Her grandmother had cut a cross into the gatepost the winter the barn burned, and every year since, the men of the house had scratched a tally beside it, one notch for each lamb that lived through the cold. Seven notches stood there for the Christmas lambs. Ada followed the prints past the post and did not stop to count them.

The beck had frozen over in a skin of grey glass, and the moon came through it in pieces. Her father was kneeling at the middle, reaching down a black hole where a ewe had gone through, a rope looped under his arms and fraying in his fists. Every fleck of frost on the ice caught the lantern light and held it, like stones set in a ring. Ada lay flat, slid the length of the rope to him, and together they hauled until the ewe came up steaming and furious onto the snow.

Back at the gate, with the ewe bleating in the barn and her father asleep in his coat, Ada took the knife from the windowsill. She cut the eighth notch beside the cross. Then, because her hand was steady and the frost still sparkled on her sleeve, she cut a small heart below it, so the post would know who had walked back over the ice.
