Music note tattoos around an ear

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of an ear with a small cluster of music symbols tattooed along the cartilage. A treble clef sits in the upper inner ear, followed by a flat sign, a quaver, a sharp sign and a bass clef, with three beamed quavers on the lobe. The thin black linework is crisp, with no shading, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the design.

Nell had been at the bakery since three, and by half four her hands knew the work better than her head did. Mr Okafor did not talk while he shaped, so the room was full of other sounds: the deck oven ticking as it heated, the slap of dough on the bench, and under them a tune he hummed without seeming to notice.

She had tried to catch it on the back of a delivery docket. Three quick notes for the rolls he slashed in a row, a sharp for the rye that always rose a shade too high, a flat for the tin that dented if left too long. "Who taught you that?" she asked. He shrugged and kept folding. "My mother. She sang the bake, not the recipe. You learn the oven that way."

Before dawn the first trays came out and the tune finally made sense to her. The treble clef was the bread that went in early and the bass clef was the slow loaves that needed the low heat at the back. She stopped trying to write it and simply listened, pencil behind her ear, as the racks ticked and cooled.

At six the first van pulled up outside. Mr Okafor pressed his thumb into a sourdough, listened to the crust, and said it was a half-beat behind. Nell laughed, and for the first time she heard the whole morning the way he did, each batch with its own small rhythm, and none of it written down.
