Small outline triangle on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single black outline of an equilateral triangle sits on the side of the torso, below the armpit and above the ribs. The lines look thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the ink is a dark grey-black against the skin. The image is a casual, close-cropped photo with the subject in a grey sleeveless top, and the tattoo is placed near the centre of the frame.

Pull that bench closer, the late windfalls are sweet this week and the wasps know it as well as you do. No, leave the cider jug, I'll tell this one dry. My grandmother's brothers, Ned, Tobias and the youngest, Cass, quarrelled over Hallam Orchard the summer their father died, and the quarrel had three corners, same as the mark cut into the gatepost.

Ned wanted the orchard split down the middle with a hedge. Tobias wanted it sold to the man from Ledbury. Cass said nothing, which was the worst of it, so one night in August he walked the boundary with a ball of string and a bag of pegs. He pegged three trees, one at each corner, ran the string from peg to peg, and where the string made a triangle he dug a hole the size of a cider barrel. Nobody asked what he put in it. Nobody dug it back up.

Come morning the brothers stood at the gate looking at the three pegs and the string, and for once neither of them had a word. Cass had given each of them a tree and the ground between, and the ground between was the only part nobody could sell without the other two agreeing. Ned grumbled, Tobias laughed until he coughed, and the three of them picked the last of the Bramleys together that autumn, which is more than I can say for most families.

The string rotted long ago and the trees are stumps now, but the triangle is still there if you know where to stand. Mind the wasps on your way out. And if anyone asks what's under the ground, tell them it's whatever kept those three talking.
