Thin crescent tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, one hand raised into her hair and her top straps visible over bare shoulders. A single thin black crescent or curved line tattoo sits on the upper back, close to the neck and shoulder blade. The plain pale wall behind her keeps the focus on the tattoo and the soft natural light.

The lift in Harrow Court had been dead since Tuesday, so Nell Okafor carried the shopping up thirty-two flights with the bag hooked over one wrist while her brother Ferdinand counted the landings out loud below her. Nobody in the block trusted the lift anyway. It groaned like a ship in a storm and stopped between floors whenever someone was in a hurry.

On the twenty-sixth landing the stairwell window faced west over the car park and the canal, and that was where the moon showed itself, thin as a paring, caught between the cranes at the docks. Nell had always called it the bent nail. Her grandfather called it the boat that had lost its crew. Ferdinand said it was only the moon and sat down on the step to sulk about it.

On the roof, where they went on Fridays to shout across the estate at nothing, Mr Lusk the caretaker was scraping lichen off the parapet with a wallpaper knife. He had been up there so long the pigeons nested in his hat. He said the crescent painted near the stairwell hatch had been there since 1968, when a girl from the fourth floor climbed up with a tin of white gloss so the night-shift lads would know where the lift shaft ended and the sky began. Nobody had repainted it since. The gloss had gone the colour of old teeth.

Nell took the knife from him and worked at the grime until a curve came up pale under her thumb. Below, the windows of thirty-two flights lit one by one, and the moon sat in the gap above the cranes as if it had been waiting for her to finish.
