Small black fine line palm tree tattoo on the upper arm of a woman seen from behind, with long brown hair and a white top.

Small palm tree tattoo on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small palm tree is tattooed on the outer upper arm, with a thin single-line trunk rising to a cluster of spiky black fronds. The linework is delicate and the ink is solid black with no shading. The subject is seen from behind against a soft, pale background of white bedding, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hall smells of floor polish and sausage rolls nobody is eating, and Mr Okafor's old classroom is a store cupboard now, but you still know exactly where the window sticks. Marisa Leigh finds you by the urn. She has the same laugh, the one that got you both sent out of Geography in Year Nine for drawing a palm tree in the margin of the atlas and labelling it the Mediterranean.

She doesn't ask about the job or the flat in Reading. She asks whether you still have the atlas. You don't; it went in a skip behind the science block the summer you left. But you remember the tree: one stroke for the trunk, then a burst of spiky fronds, as if someone had flicked ink from a brush and let it dry where it landed. Marisa said it looked like a firework that had given up halfway.

Later, the caretaker dims the lights and the two of you end up sitting on the car park wall, passing a bottle of cheap cider and talking about the places you swore you would go. Marisa has been to Lisbon twice. You have been to Margate. She says that's the same thing with better weather, and you laugh until someone shouts from the door that the taxis are here.

At the kerb she pulls a biro from her bag and, on the back of a raffle ticket, draws a palm in three quick strokes: a thin line, a crown of spikes. She presses it into your hand. "Still the Mediterranean," she says. You keep it folded in your coat all the way home, and by Didcot you have unfolded it twice just to check the fronds are still there.
