Three arrows on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Three small arrows point upwards in a loose cluster on the outer forearm. The linework is thin and crisp, with the shafts and arrowheads in dark ink and the feathers tinted red. The soft grey sleeve and loose hair frame the arm against a plain teal wall.

Dear Ada,

You will want the news before the gossip, so here it is: Tom Scoular has finally shot the bird off the top of the chapel gatepost, and the whole row is insufferable about it. Mam says he cheated with a borrowed bow, but Mr Hebden the fletcher swears the arrow was true, and he has never lied about feathers in his life.
Hebden's shop smells of glue and singed goose quill now that the colliery has its own order for pit pony harness. He dyed the feathers on the last three shafts himself, madder root boiled in the copper, so they come out the red of a bad cut. I sat on his stool while he bound them. He said a fletcher's work is to make a thing that goes exactly where it is pointed, and that nothing else in the village can claim as much.
I thought of you when he tied the third one, because you always said three was one too many for a sensible girl to carry. He told me the three arrows in the old bundle were for the bow, the quiver and the man who lets go. I did not ask which of us he meant.
Come home at Whitsun if the mistress allows it. The shafts will keep, and so will the gossip, but Tom's chest is set on showing you the gatepost.
Your loving sister, Nell
