Small pine tree on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black pine or fir tree sits on the upper arm, shown from behind with the person's face out of frame. The tree is a simple silhouette with a tapering crown and a short trunk, filled in with black ink and no shading. The soft grey dress and pale wooden background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The snow reached the second step of the porch on Tuesday and nobody has come up the track since. Mum says the road will open when the pass thaws, which means April, which means you will have to take my word for everything that happens here until then. Two guests are still with us, a surveyor who drinks his tea black and a widow who plays patience at the window table every evening and cheats at it, I'm sure.
Yesterday I went out with the spade to clear the woodshed door and found the old pine by the gate bent double under its load, the branches sagging like a row of wet coats. Dad always said a spruce would shed its snow but a true pine holds on, and you have to knock it off with the handle of a broom or it will break. So I did that, for an hour, until my fingers stopped being mine. You'd have laughed. I looked like the snowman you built the year you were nine, with the carrot nose and no mouth.
Anyway. The reason I'm writing is the sign. Mum wants it repainted before the spring coaches, and she asked me to draw the little tree we use on the stationery, the one Grandad cut into the lintel. I did it in black gouache on the back of a bill and it looked wrong, too wide at the top. Then I thought of the tree at the gate and got it right. Come home and see it. Come home at least for the sign.
Love, Ros
