Small outline heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, open outline heart sits on the outer forearm just above the wrist, with a few faint freckle-like dots beside it. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is a single dark tone with no shading. The hand is raised against a plain white background, with a gold ring on the middle finger and another on the little finger, so the tattoo is the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Kittiwake's name had flaked off in March, and Mrs Tennant wanted it back on her transom before the inspector came up the coast from Seaton Quay. I was the one with the steady hand, so I sat on an upturned crate with a fine brush and a tin of black enamel, painting letters no thicker than a fishing line.

Between the K and the i, I let the brush drift and drew a little heart on the planking, open at the top like a pair of cupped hands. Nobody had asked for it. Old Gideon, who had sailed with her husband, stood over me and said it was a foolish place for ornament. I told him the transom was the one part of a boat nobody ever checked, and that a thing kept small was easier to carry.

Mrs Tennant came down with the kettle and looked at it for a long time. She didn't scold. She traced the outline with one finger, careful not to smudge the wet paint, and said her husband had drawn the same shape on the back of every chart he ever folded. She had never once known whether he meant it closed or open.

Gideon's boat went out at five the next morning. The Kittiwake sat against the wall with her name fresh and that small open heart beneath it, and the tide came in under her the way it always does, filling the gap all the way up.
