The lavender came into flower a fortnight early this year, which Dad says is the warm spring and I say is the Hewitts' cows trampling the lower rows and sending the whole field into a panic. You'd laugh. We cut the first rows on Tuesday with the hooks, Mum tying the bundles behind me with garden twine knotted at the base the way Gran taught us, so the heads hang down and dry the right way.

The buyers from the chemist's in Wimbledon came Thursday and offered less than last year, and Dad shook his head and said he'd sooner burn it than sell it cheap. He's been saying that since February, and I think he means it, though the bank letter sits on the dresser where he can see it from his chair.

I kept the best sprig back for you. I stripped the bottom leaves and wrapped the stem so it wouldn't crumble in the post, and I pressed it flat between two pages of the Radio Times while I waited for Mr Pryce to bring the van round. It's gone the grey-green of an old penny now, and the flowers still hold their shape if you touch them gently.

Would you come home for a week before the sale? Only if you want to. Dad won't ask, but he's been walking the rows in the evenings with his hands behind his back, counting something I can't see.
