Small red bow tattoo on a finger

Hand · Colour · Photo

A small bow with pink-red fill and a dark outline sits across the middle finger, with a thin red band extending to either side. The linework is clean and bold, with simple flat shading inside the bow loops. The hand rests on black plastic sheeting, and the pink, mint green and dark brown nail polish sits behind the colour of the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ribbon-maker of Calder Vale had one rule, and Ada Penhallow broke it the morning the bells went quiet. She was meant to tie the oath-thread round the smallest finger of each new magistrate, a single red band, and leave the bow for the wedding. But the magistrate's clerk had lost his nerve and his purse, and the bow was all she had left in her basket.

I tied it anyway, across the middle knuckle where the cloth would not slip. Red silk, stiffened with beeswax, folded into two loops and pinched at the centre the way my mother taught me, so the knot looked like a small bird pausing mid-flight. The clerk watched me the whole time. He said nothing. In Calder Vale, nobody spoke while a bow was being made, in case the words pulled it loose.

Forty years on, the bow still holds. The silk has faded to the colour of old brick and the wax has darkened, but the thread either side of it is unbroken, and the clerk's grandchildren still come to the shop to ask why the Vale's oaths are tied in such a silly shape. I tell them the truth: a bow can be undone with one tug, which is exactly why it makes people careful. A knot you can open is a promise you choose to keep.
