Small pink bow tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

A small bow outline sits across the middle finger of a hand, filled with pink and edged with a fine dark line. The rest of the hand shows painted nails in pink, mint green and dark red against a black plastic sheet. The composition is a close, straight-on view of the hand with the tattoo centred on the finger.

The lock keeper at Hythe Bridge always said the Norah Belle was the only boat on the Kennet that came through with its paint dry and its temper up. My father laughed at that every time, then tied a length of pink ribbon around the tiller before we pulled out, because he said the ribbon was for luck and the tiller was for steering, and he never once admitted the two had nothing to do with each other.

The winter we were stuck at Crofton, the cut froze white at the edges and he taught me the knots he knew. Bowline, sheet bend, the slippery hitch that held a mooring line when the water wanted the boat gone. He made me tie a bow the way his mother had taught him, loops crossed and pulled snug. "A bow you can undo," he said, "is a bow you meant to undo." I thought he was being clever. I was nine.

He went into the ground at Marlborough the spring I turned thirty, and I brought the Norah Belle down the cut alone. At Hythe the gates stuck, and the keeper leaned out of his hut to shout at me about it. I had no ribbon for the tiller, so I took a scrap of the pink from the bottom of his tackle box and tied a small bow around my middle finger, pulled snug, the way he showed me.

When the keeper asked what it was for, I told him it was a knot I hadn't undone yet. He shrugged, swung the gate, and I felt the boat lift as the water rose under us.
