The frost arrived the night my father agreed to sell the glasshouses, so we spent until four in the morning lighting paraffin heaters between the benches and hoping the stock would hold. I was nineteen and sulking about the sale. He stood in the doorway with his flat cap in both hands, watching me kneel on the wet concrete with his old budding knife.

You take one bud from the wood of the good rose, no bigger than a lentil, and slide it under the bark of a wild stock so the two green skins meet. Then you bind it with raffia and leave it be. Most fail. Father used to say a nursery was only a long list of the ones that didn't take. My hands shook from the cold, and twice I cut too deep, and twice he said nothing, which was worse than shouting.

The old climber by the gate had been dead since spring, its black canes pulled down like rope nobody wanted, but its wood still held one sound bud. I cut that one. By the time the sky went grey over the car park, the first leaf had pushed through the raffia, dark green and bright at the edges, and a second bud had swelled on the cane beside it.

Father crouched beside me, his knees cracking, and turned the pot towards the heater. "Well," he said. Then he took a length of red wool from his coat pocket, the kind he used for tying tomato canes, and bound it loosely around the stem. "Buyers like to see something they can trust," he said, and went to put the kettle on.
