Small rose on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small rose in bloom with a thin stem and two leaves is drawn on the forearm of a bent arm. The linework is delicate and even, with minimal shading, and the design sits in the lower part of the frame on pale skin against a white background. The composition is simple and close, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Mairead,

The boat came in on Thursday with the mail and a cardboard box tied with twine, and inside it, wrapped in wet newspaper from Oban, was the rose cutting you asked for. I nearly didn't open it. The paper had gone soft and brown and the stem looked like a bit of kindling, but when I scraped at the bark with my thumbnail there was green underneath, and I laughed out loud on the quay like a fool.

I put it in the old sink by the back door, where the light comes in sideways in the afternoons. Your father's bucket is still there, the one with the dent, and I filled it with rainwater because the tap goes brown when the wind is from the west. Mrs Kerr says roses won't take on the island, that the salt gets in the leaves, but she said that about the apple tree too, and it has given us apples every year since you left.

Two leaves came out on Sunday. Small, serrated, the colour of old pennies. I told the bucket about it. I suppose I am getting strange out here with only the gulls for company, but you know I never could leave a thing unsaid.

Write when the next boat comes, and tell me whether you can see the bud from your window yet. I have pinned a note to the door in case the wind takes the first bloom before I do.

Love, Nan
