Wildflower sprig on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised forearm and clenched hand, with dark nail polish, against a plain light background. A small sprig of wildflowers and leaves, with thin stems and delicate buds, sits on the forearm angled upwards towards the hand. The linework is fine and even, with minimal shading, and the image is entirely black and white.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The well at Sallow Crossing had been dry for three summers when the carter came up the road with a sack of salt and a mule that would not stop looking backwards. The innkeeper asked what he wanted. He said he wanted the seed woman who lived past the last fence, where the road gave up and became two pale ruts in the grit.

She was sitting on an upturned crate, shelling something into her lap. She did not get up. She reached into a tin and gave him a bundle of stems tied with grey thread, yarrow and rue and a sprig of something with buds still shut tight. Plant them where the wheels meet, she said, and do not water them with what you carry. He asked why. She said the flowers only open for those who walk the road without turning round, and that he had already turned round twice since the inn.

He did not believe her, but the mule had stopped at the ruts and would go no further, so he knelt in the dust and pressed the stems into a crack where the two wheels ran together. He poured out the last of his drinking water, which he had been saving for himself, and the mule drank it from his cupped hands. He did not look back once. By morning three buds had split open, white and a blue like thin milk, and the grit around them was damp.

People still stop at Sallow Crossing. If you walk the ruts at dawn and do not turn your head, you will find a green sprig growing where the wheels meet, and the mule will be standing very still beside it, watching the road ahead.
