Small rose on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare arm bent at the elbow against a pale background. A small rose with a short stem and a leaf is tattooed on the forearm, drawn in thin black linework with light shading. The tattoo is a small, central detail in an otherwise plain, minimal composition.

Her father had taken the Mary Ann down this stretch for thirty years and never once carried a flower aboard. Flowers were for funerals and weddings, he said, and a barge was neither. Nell thought of him whenever the water went brown and sluggish below Newark, and she talked to the rose the way he had talked to the horses that once pulled boats along the towpath, low and without asking much of it.
On the last night before the tideway, a boy from the Ferry House came down the bank with a lantern and a question about money owed for a cracked hatch. Nell paid him in cold tea and sent him off. When she turned back, the rose had put out a leaf overnight, small and sure, where there had been nothing but a bare green stalk. She left it there. By morning the barge had slid under the bridge at Gainsborough, and the leaf was still turning towards the light coming off the water.
