Small semicolon tattoo on the inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small solid black semicolon sits on the inner wrist, with its dot above and comma below. The ink is dense and even with no shading, and the glyph has crisp edges against pale skin. The plain white background keeps the focus on the mark, while the person's hand and dark hair frame the upper part of the shot.

Dear Tomas,

The road closed on Tuesday and the drifts have come up to the sill of the lower window, so the mule-man will not be back before the thaw. You will have to forgive the ink, which I have thinned with the last of the brandy and the kettle's steam. Mother has gone to bed with her feet in a sack of warm barley. The two Dutch surveyors have played cards at the long table since supper, and the younger one loses on purpose, I am sure of it, because he keeps glancing at the stove when he thinks nobody sees.

I have been thinking about the ledger you left under the counter. Page after page of your square hand, every debt and every bushel, and then in the margin of the last page a small mark: a dot above a little hook. I asked you once what it meant and you said it meant the sentence was not finished yet, only resting. I laughed at you. Tonight I understand it better. The snow has stopped the coach, the bells at Lerch have gone quiet, and still the hours carry on without anyone telling them to stop. I am sitting in exactly that place, with my pen lifted.

Here is what I have decided. When the road is open I will take the room above the stable and sleep there with the window cracked for the cold. I will not wait for the letter from Vienna to tell me whether the lease is mine. I will write my own answer on the back of it, post it, and then stop explaining myself to the walls.

Your sister, who is not finished, Greta
