Small semicolon tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a small, solid black semicolon tattooed on the inner wrist. The mark is simple, with clean, even lines and no shading, and it sits low on the wrist below the thumb. The plain white background and soft natural light keep the focus on the tattoo and the coral nails.

At Dunmore Crossing the telegraph hut sat half-buried in drift, and Ruth Calloway had learned to read the wind by the hum in the wire. Tonight the hum was low and steady, which meant the line would hold and she had time to finish the message she had been composing since sundown. She pressed the key and sent the words for the stationmaster at Halse: 'Wagon overturned Ochre Flats mile nine. Driver alive. Mules lost.'

The reply came back at once. 'Confirm wagon count.' She looked at the ledger, at the pencilled line where old Tobias Renn had signed out his freight on Thursday, and at the empty peg by the door where his lantern usually hung. There had been one wagon. There was always one wagon with Tobias. She tapped the confirmation, then sat with her finger resting on the brass, unwilling to let the wire go quiet.
Every operator on the line was taught to close a message with a full stop and let the silence take it. Ruth had never liked that. So she sent a short line, paused the length of a breath, and sent a second: 'Rider wanted at mile nine before the heat. Tell him I kept the lamp lit.' The pause was not an ending. It was a promise that there was more to say.
Halse answered with two words: 'Understood. Hold.' Out on the flats the sky was greying, and far off a thin rope of dust was already lifting where the rider had set out. Ruth kept her hand on the key until it grew warm, and the wire went on humming.
