Tiny starburst on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A small starburst made of short radiating lines sits on the upper shoulder of a person wearing a white off-shoulder top and a grey and pink strap. The lines are thin and delicate, with blue at the top and pink and red towards the lower edge, giving a light, sketchy effect. The soft-focus background and natural light keep the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Old Mabel Sorrow, who kept the level crossing, said the fog was made of sheep's wool and would only lift for a proper light.

So she took the brass sunburst off the station clock, the one with eight thin spokes that the company had painted blue at the tips and pink at the root, and she fixed it to the top of the lamp pole. Each spoke she had bent by hand over three winters, so no two were quite straight. When she struck the lamp, the colours threw themselves out along the rails like spray off a kettle.
The drivers of the night goods could read the light by its colours. Blue meant the points were set true, pink meant hold back, and the red at the lower edge meant come slowly, there is someone on the line. Mabel never saw the walker herself, only heard later from the guard that the engine had stopped in time. She kept the lamp burning until the fog thinned, which took a fortnight, and then she gave the sunburst back to the clock, where it still sits, bent just a little askew.
