Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a six-pointed star with a circle at its centre sits on the upper back, shown in a black and white photograph. The linework is thin and even, with the star formed from two overlapping triangles and the circle drawn inside. The surrounding skin is plain and the framing is close, with the tattoo placed near the middle of the frame.

The stone was already cold when Tomas Halloran pressed the chisel into your hand and said the Ministry wanted the mark cut before the frost. You knelt on wet heather with the two surveyors arguing behind you in two languages, and neither of them looked at the stone long enough to see what it was: a boundary post on a ridge where the line had been drawn by a man who never climbed it.

You cut the star first, two triangles overlapping like hands clasped at a wedding, then the circle in the middle, a little sun to show the stone faced the morning. The chisel slipped once and the circle wobbled. You smoothed it with your thumbnail, the way your father taught you to fix a bad figure in a ledger, and nobody on either side of the ridge would ever know.

When the men left, they took the good lantern and the survey book, and you stayed on the stone while the light went. From the top you could see the customs hut on the left slope, its single bulb flickering on, and on the right a village whose dogs barked at the same moon. Whoever came up from either side would find the same mark cut into the rock, the same small sun looking back at them.

In April the survey book came back to the hut with a note in the margin, in a hand you did not know: Stone fourteen sound. Centre true. You read it twice at the counter. The officer stamped your permit, slid it back across the wood, and said nothing at all, which was the answer you had wanted.
