Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched hand is held towards the camera, with a small outlined skull tattoo on one finger between two thin rings. The linework is simple and dark, with little or no shading. Brother Tobin kept the gate of Saint Aldric's for thirty winters, and in all that time nobody had knocked on it with a fist carrying a skull. So when the knocking came on the feast of the Holy Innocents, he did not open the grille at once. He counted the knocks instead. There were three, a pause, then three more, the way the old abbot had taught them to answer a stranger who might be trouble.

Through the grille he could see only a clenched fist pressed flat to the wood, and on one finger a small grey skull set between two thin bands that caught the lantern light. The skull looked at him the way skulls do, without opinion.
'Who asks for entry?' he said.
'A traveller who has walked from the salt marsh with nothing in his pockets but a debt,' said the fist. 'I owe your cellarer a barrel of eels and a night's prayer. I have brought neither. Only myself.'
Tobin had heard a hundred such bargains. But the rule said the gate must open to anyone willing to pray, so he drew the bolt. The man who came in was wet and ordinary, and he went straight to the chapel and knelt until the bell for matins. When Tobin brought him bread, he said the debt was paid and asked whether the skull had ever bothered the brothers. Tobin said it had not. A skull, he thought, was only a clock that kept its face toward the wearer.
In the morning the man was gone. On the sill of the grille lay a silver ring, too narrow for any grown finger, and Tobin hung it on the nail beside the cellar keys. Every winter after, when the knocking came, he counted three and three and drew the bolt.
