Crescent moon and sun on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close black and white photograph of a hand with a small crescent moon and a tiny sun tattooed on the side of one finger. The linework is thin and slightly dotted, with the moon on the left and the sun on the right. The plain white background keeps the focus on the small design and the curve of the finger.

Mrs Abernathy had been in room four since Easter, and every morning she left the same small pencil marks on the inside of the sideboard drawer where the spare keys lived. Half a moon, then a sun, scratched so faintly I had to tilt the drawer to the window to see them. I asked her once what they were for. She said they were for knowing which way was up when the fog came in off the harbour and swallowed the front steps.

I thought it was nonsense until the February gale, when the power went out along the front and I found myself on the landing with a torch, counting days on the wall by feel. Her marks ran down the drawer in pairs, moon then sun, all the way back to January. Forty-one pairs. She had been keeping a tally of something I had never bothered to ask about.
The next morning her room was stripped and the bed made tight as a drum. On the dressing table lay a tide table folded open to the week of the spring equinox, one date circled in pencil and a note in careful capitals: THE WATER TURNS BEFORE THE LIGHT DOES. Beneath it, a single crescent and a sun, pressed so hard the paper had dented.
I have kept that drawer closed since. Some mornings I open it anyway, and the marks are still there, pairs of them, one for every day she waited for the tide to turn.
