Small sprig tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small sprig or twig with tiny buds and leaves is tattooed on the forearm, curving across the skin near the elbow. The linework is thin and even, with the shading kept minimal so the design reads as a delicate outline. The photograph is black and white, with a bar interior and a bright light in the background.

The cook on the Harriet Vane kept a sprig of blackthorn in a jam jar above the stove, and the men said it was bad luck to move it. Nobody remembered who had cut it. It had come aboard at Grimsby in the bottom of a flour sack, bent into a curve like a hook because the sack was too short for it.

When the sea turned in the autumn, the men grew quiet and ate their biscuits without talking. Old Pell, who had sailed the north run for forty years, said the twig had been cut from a hedge where a fisherman's daughter used to sit and wait for her father's boat. He said it plainly, the way he gave the tide times, and nobody laughed. The cook only nodded and added salt to the pot.
On the ninth night the wind dropped and the lamp in the galley hung still on its hook. The cook went to the jar and found a pale green bud pushing from the cut end, no larger than a fingernail. She called the watch down. They stood in the heat of the stove with their caps in their hands, and not one of them spoke until Pell did.
'Well,' said Pell. 'Then she's home.' They raised the Humber at first light, and the cook carried the jar up the companionway herself, held level, so the water would not spill.
