Fine line script on a heartbeat line

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small fine line tattoo of cursive script sits along a single thin vertical stroke that rises and dips like a pulse trace, on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The linework is crisp and even, with the lettering shown in solid black ink and no shading. The photo is greyscale, with the arm centred against a wet, patterned pavement and part of a shoe and trouser leg visible at the left.

Mr Okafor's trace was a mess of spikes at the start, then it settled, the way the old ones do when they stop fighting the bed. She had been told not to read the peaks aloud to relatives. She read them anyway, under her breath, the way other people counted sheep. Rise, dip, rise. Each one was a small proof that someone was still in the room.

At four the consultant rang down to say the family had gone home and the far bay could go dark. Marta folded the strip into a cardboard sleeve and wrote the date across the top in her neat looping hand, the same hand that signed every birthday card she had ever sent her sister in Edinburgh. Her sister had stopped ringing on weekdays. Sundays were enough, she said, and then she didn't ring on Sundays either.

Outside, the car park was wet and striped with sodium light. Marta walked to the bus stop with the sleeve under her arm and thought about the paper lying flat in the dark somewhere, all those rises and falls, each one a word that had not yet been finished. The bus came early for once. She got on, sat near the front, and held the sleeve on her knee like something that might still be warm.
